Lil’ Kickers DMV Brings Soccer to Northern Virginia Toddlers
Local Coaches Launch Year-Round Indoor Program for Kids 18 Months-9 Years old
Annandale, VA: Lil’Kickers DMV, a new program offering children as young as 18 months an age-appropriate introduction to soccer, is halfway through its first season of classes and community response has been enthusiastic.
Lil’ Kickers DMV is run by the staff of Total Futbol, a local soccer training and coaching outfit that has guided teams to five Virginia State Cup championships and sent more than 80 area players to compete in college since 2012 alone. But they are narrowing in on youngsters in their newest venture.
“Northern Virginia is one of the nation’s hotbeds for soccer so it makes perfect sense to bring the benefits of this fun, high-energy, age-appropriate program to the area,” said Nadir Moumen, Director of Total Futbol and founder of Lil’ Kickers DMV. “The classes are truly purposeful play—we work on developing balance and coordination but even more importantly, listening skills and socialization.”
Many of the Lil’ Kickers DMV instructors include current and former high level youth soccer players from Northern Virginia who were trained by Total Futbol and who have been recruited to play in college, as well as older, professional coaches.
“We look forward to going every week and the coaches are amazing, they’re young and full of energy,” said Tammy Rasheed, whose 2-year old attends a Lil’ Kickers DMV parent-child class at the Nova Field House in Chantilly. “Each child gets their full one-on-one with a coach. My son really has learned a lot and does not stop asking to play at home.”
Formal soccer training for kids rarely begins before the age of five or six but Lil’ Kickers seeks to introduce children to the game of soccer early in order to build strong physical, intellectual and emotional skills that will enable them to be successful both on and off the soccer field. Each Lil’ Kickers class is 50-minutes in length and focuses on making development-based skills fun.
“With our older players, we’ve seen soccer bring enormous benefits,” said Todd Hamlin, Assistant Director of Total Futbol. “Middle school and high school players learn how to work with others on a team, how to be efficient managing their academics, and how to stay physically fit. They gain confidence. We wanted to bring these best elements of the game to younger players in the area.”
The Lil’ Kickers DMV program runs year-round, broken up into four seasons. Each season is between 11 and 13 weeks long, and classes are currently offered at four locations, McLean Sport & Health in McLean, the Nova Field House in Chantilly, Cassel’s Sports Complex in Herndon and the Merritt Academy in Fairfax. Classes are all indoors, so they are able to provide year-round soccer in an area where outdoor activities for children are often cancelled due to poor field conditions.
About Lil’ Kickers DMV
In 1999, Arena Sports (Seattle, WA) started Lil’ Kickers with the goal of building a kids’ program that develops a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive skills while providing physical exercise and developing players who are good sports and good teammates — on and off the soccer field. Using world renowned child development theories, child development professionals, experienced coaches and the expertise that comes along with thousands of hours of working with children, Lil’ Kickers created a curriculum that introduces kids to soccer and so much more. The Arena Sports Lil’ Kickers program has now grown into a national franchise with more than 130 locations in 32 states and now in Canada with an enrollment of over 400,000 kids and growing.
Lil’ Kickers DMV is one of the newest franchises of this national program, offering classes convenient to Washington, DC, and to the following cities in Northern Virginia: Aldie, Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington, Ashburn, Brambleton, Burke, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Falls Church, Great Falls, Herndon, Loudoun, McLean, Oakton, Reston, South Riding, Springfield, Sterling, Stone Ridge, Tysons, and Vienna.
