In response, the Pakistani president’s office has condemned the “cowardly attempt” by militant groups to seize the capital, saying they had resorted to “violent terrorism to expand their caliphate.”

President Donald Trump said he was “unconvinced that the current status quo is satisfactory for Afghanistan.”

“I do not believe there are any areas of security which we should be giving up and I do not believe that, at this time, that we can and we should maintain the status quo,” the Republican president said.

Washington believes that the Afghan government has failed to make inroads into Taliban-controlled territory as much as they have managed to advance into the capital of Kabul.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said US drone strikes “have no effect” on the Taliban leader.

“If Trump is the only one saying that, that’s not something to celebrate in my opinion. My point was that today we can no longer pretend that our security situation is better than last week. No progress has been made in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan in more than a year,” he said in a video.

“It’s sad that America is playing so hard to get back in the fight against terrorism. What did we learn from the past 10 years? That a peace accord that was promised and kept does not work.”

While Washington says that the Taliban are holding ground in Afghanistan’s north, it admits they are struggling to break into strategic places inside the nation.

“Afghan security forces are doing quite the job, we think. We have a number of opportunities. Some opportunities we’re currently able to take advantage of,” Army Col. Dave Benham, who heads the US military’s international coalition battling the Taliban, told NBC News in an interview.

But he added: “We’re seeing a number of areas, in particular some of the provincial areas we’ve liberated that are quite difficult to capture.”

Trump described recent airstrikes as a necessary counter to Afghan military and security advances, but said they would continue until it was “very, very easy to deal with the problem.”
